NEW YORK RIPTIDE SELECT EIGHT PLAYERS IN THE NLL DRAFT

Uniondale, NY (September 17, 2020) – After selecting Jeff Teat from Cornell University with the No. 1 overall pick in the NLL Entry Draft on Thursday night, the New York Riptide made four selections in the second round, one in the fourth and two in the sixth.

With the 17th overall pick, the team selected Matieu Boissonneault from Canisius and the Whitby Warriors. Boissonneault, who served as team captain during the 2020 season, is the 12th player in Canisius history to be selected in the NLL Entry Draft. In four seasons with the Griffs, he saw action in 50 games with 80 goals and 27 assists for 107 points. After spending his freshman year as a defender and long-stick midfielder, he transitioned to attack for his final three collegiate campaigns. In a COVID-19 shortened senior season, Boissonneault led the team with 13 goals and was second on the squad with 17 points, becoming the 22nd player in program history to reach 100 career points on February 18th. An All-MAAC First Team selection following his junior year and All-MAAC Second Team honoree as a sophomore, he also represented Canada at the FIL U-19 World Championships in 2016, earning a silver medal. He spent five seasons in the OJALL with Whitby, recording 75 points on 22 goals and 53 assists.

Following that pick, the Riptide made a trade, sending John Wagner to the Rochester Knighthawks for Darryl Robertson, Jay Thorimbert and the 25th pick. With that selection, the team selected Ty Thompson from the University of Hartford and the Orangeville Northmen. The 6-foot-6 lefthander won a Minto Cup with Orangeville in 2019 after a Junior B career with the Nepean Knights. In 19 games over two seasons at Hartford, Thompson had 54 points on 22 goals and 32 assists.

With the 29th pick the Riptide selected Andrew Borgatti from Wilfrid-Laurier University. A CUFLA Academic All-Canadian honoree following the 2019 season, Borgatti had 14 points on seven goals and seven assists that season. He spent three seasons with Brampton and wrapped up his junior career with the Kitchener-Waterloo Braves. In 20 games for the Braves, he had 12 points with six goals and six assists. To wrap up the second round, the Riptide selected Larson Sundown from Limestone. Sundown, who will be at RIT for a 5th year, was a two-time NJCAA First Team-All American and earned Conference Carolinas Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2019. That season, he set a Limestone record with 110 points on 70 goals and 40 assists.

In the fourth round, 53rd overall, the Riptide selected Kris Veltman from the West Durham Ironheads. In 2019, he was named Junior B East’s Most Valuable Defensive Player. In 55 games with the Ironheads over five seasons, he had 39 points with 16 goals and 23 assists. New York wrapped up the night by selecting Dawson Tait with the 81st overall pick in the sixth round. Tait is returning to RIT for a 5th year. In 2019, he started 22 games for RIT, set new career highs in points (73), goals (41) and assists (32) while earning Honorable Mention All-American honors. With the 82nd pick, the Riptide selected Ryan Tierney from Hofstra University. A native of Massapequa, NY, Tierney was named the CAA Preseason Player of the Year prior to the season being shortened in 2020. In 49 games over four seasons, he had 186 points with 121 goals and 65 assists. The CAA Rookie of the Year in 2017, Tierney also earned All-CAA First Team honors in 2018 and 2019.

The Riptide will return to Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum for the franchise’s second season in 2020-21. For more information please visit NewYorkRiptide.com or on social media at @NewYorkRiptide.
