ORLIN & COHEN POSTGAME REPORT: RIPTIDE BEAT RUSH 14-11

The New York Riptide and the Saskatchewan Rush met Saturday night, March 23rd at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. This was the second straight week the two teams matched up, with the Rush coming out victorious in the first meeting. The Riptide were able to capture a win this time out and split the season series 1-1. The Riptide were led by Jeff Teat, who scored or assisted on 13 out of the 14 goals scored for the Riptide. The 14-11 win gives the Riptide’s bring the Riptide’s playoff chances back into play as the win moved them back into eighth place in the NLL. The Rush slide down to the eleventh spot after last weekend’s win had them in a playoff spot entering this game.

The Riptide offense was dialed in from the opening whistle. After being acquired in a trade before last weekend’s game, Taggart Clark got the Riptide on the board one minute and twenty seconds into the game. This was Clark’s first goal at home in a Riptide jersey and was one of three goals he scored in the first half. Larson Sundown continued his offensive tear in the last month as he scored two goals in this game while assisting on six others. The Riptide were able to outscore the Rush 4-2 in both quarters and had an 8-4 lead heading into halftime.

Larson Sundown and Stephen Keogh got the Riptide on the board in the third quarter before a valiant comeback effort from the Rush brought the game back to a one-goal game. With 11 minutes left in the game, Stephen Keogh scored back-to-back goals for the Riptide to regain the advantage. Robert Church and Jeff Teat traded goals the rest of the way as the Riptide walked away with a 14-11 win. Cameron Dunkerley bounced back from a rough game in Saskatchewan last weekend, allowing just 11 goals while making 36 saves.

Jeff Teat and Larson Sundown were all over the floor tonight. The two lefties combined for 21 points on the night and had their hands involved in every goal tonight. The Riptide powerplay was 1/1 tonight, improving on their already best in the NLL powerplay. The Penalty Kill was solid as well for the Riptide as they held the Rush PP to just 25% on four chances. The special teams play for the Riptide has been huge all season for them and will continue to be in if they want to make a run in the playoffs.

The Riptide will take a week off before returning to competition on April 6th against the Rochester Knighthawks. The two teams have not played yet this season and will meet on the 6th in a game that will have massive implications on the standings.  Rochester is just 1 game behind the Riptide for the final playoff spot with two extra games remaining. The Riptide will have three games left this season against Rochester, Vancouver, and Albany at home to finish the season.
